What are Presbyterians?

We are believers in Jesus Christ who are governed by a form of democracy that is traced to the early Christian Church where the leaders and teachers were referred to with the Greek work "Presbuteros" meaning "elder." Elders are elected f
rom within each congregation to server under the instructions of the Bible.

We share beliefs and creeds with all Christians but emphasize a strong belief in God's grace, as show in our Brief Statement of Faith which says:

"In Life and in death we belong to God. Through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel whom alone we worship and serve..."

The Creeds of the Presbyterian Church guide us to understanding what the Bible teaches us about God, His Son, and the relationship of people to Him and His creation. The Bible for Presbyterians is the inspired word of God, and the authority for interpretation.

Presbyterians believe a reformed theology as taught in the tradition of John Calvin and other Protestant Reformers.

Some tenets of faith we share include:

  1. BulletA belief that God is sovereign. He is the creator of the Universe, of all that is seen and unseen and cares for the people of His creation.

  2. BulletA belief that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became a human to redeem people who were out of relationship with God. He is fully God and fully human.

  3. BulletA belief that Holy Spirit is the presence of God in the world enabling believers to accept God and serve Him.

  4. BulletAn acceptance of our sinful nature and the need for forgiveness and redemption which is given to believers in the atoning work of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection.

  5. BulletAn understanding that the Bible is the inspired word of God and the authoritative rule for faith and life.

  6. BulletWe acknowledge Jesus Christ as the head of the Church, which is the earthly body of Christ consisting of all who accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Presbyterians are part of this universal body with all other believers.
